Evenor Herrera, of Gypsum, is included in a special exhibit, “Remembering Our Fallen,” that is traveling around Colorado and will be on display in Gypsum at Costco Dec. 15-23.
The exhibit is intended to be an emotional reminder of the ultimate sacrifice made by 87 Coloradans killed in The War on Terror while wearing an American uniform in a war zone. The photo exhibit was unveiled Oct. 22 at the Aurora Municipal Center, at which time the families of Colorado's Fallen were some of the first to see the display.
Evenor's older brother, Balmore, and other family members attended the opening ceremony.
“The display includes a quote — ‘A man does not die until he is forgotten,'” Balmore said. “I encourage the community to remember these people and their ultimate sacrifice so that they live on. Looking at the exhibit, it's a shame how young everybody was.”
Evenor grew up in Gypsum, graduating from Eagle Valley High School in 2001.
“He joined the Marines after high school, six months after I did,” Balmore said. “He did two tours in Iraq. He died about a week before the end of his second tour, when his vehicle detonated an improvised explosive device. He was 22.
“My brother was very positive and family oriented,” Balmore continued. “He was quiet until you got to know him.”
The display honoring Evenor and his comrades will be set up near the exit of Costco starting today. Its visit here is sponsored by the town of Gypsum.
“We can never forget those who sacrificed everything for our freedom. We must remember these American Heroes and speak their names when we see their family members,” said Colonel James Biernesser (Ret.) USAF and Director of Military Programs for Bellevue University. “This exhibit is created in such a way so it can travel easily throughout Colorado, so that more people will have the opportunity to honor and remember Colorado's Fallen.”
The exhibit was created by Bill and Evonne Williams of Patriotic Productions, Omaha, and is sponsored by Bellevue University. The American Legion of Colorado and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Colorado chapter have both endorsed the project, realizing the importance of remembering those who are willing to sacrifice all.
