In a 4-3 split vote last week, the Eagle Planning and Zoning Commission rejected a proposal from the Hardscrabble Trails Coalition for the 2.1 mile Hernage Gulch Trail.
The proposed trail was for non-motorized access open to bikes, pedestrians and equestrians. On one side of the issue, mountain biking enthusiasts said the trail would be a logical extension to the existing trail network. They argued that only a small portion of the track covers ground that isn't already located in the impact zone for existing trails. Several mountain bikers advocated for the trail, saying the town's network needs some additional intermediate terrain. They also noted that the town is marketing its biking opportunities and the trail is a good addition.
Opponents of the trail extension included Craig Wescoatt of the Colorado Division of Wildlife, who characterized the area as critical wildlife habitat. Additionally, a number of trail neighbors voiced opposition to the trail.
In the final vote, members Anne McKibbin, Jared Walters, Kathy Aalto and Frances Rolater voted against the extension and members Kevin Brubeck, Sig Bjornson and Joe Knabel voted in favor.
