Robert Conklin moved from upstate New York to Eagle to be closer to his children and his grandchildren.
But Conklin soon learned that life in the Colorado high country was bad for his heart condition.
“I soon discovered I couldn't live at altitude,” said Conklin.
Instead of moving back to New York, Conklin took two steps to improve his situation — he had a pacemaker/defibrillator installed in his heart and he created a hot sauce.
“Because of my heart condition I learned I could benefit from eating hot sauce,” said Conklin. Peppers, a main ingredient in hot sauce, are beneficial to the circulatory system, he explained.
“Unfortunately I couldn't find one I really enjoyed after trying many. Basically because I am not fond of tomatoes.”
So Conklin decided to make his own hot sauce — Boborado: Colorado Boom, Boom Hot Sauce.
“I decided to produce my own sauce and the base is sweet peppers instead of tomatoes,” said Conklin. Boborado contains seven different kinds of peppers and 10 different spices.
Friends and associates of Conklin who sampled the sauce told him he was on to something. Conklin then decided to bottle his creation.
“When something is free it always seems to be really good,” said Conklin. “I decided to find out if people would be willing to pay for it to find out if I was really on to something.”
Boborado: Colorado Boom, Boom Hot Sauce is now available at Heidi's Brooklyn Deli, the Golden Oven, Paradigms, Montauk Seafood Grill and the Fusion Gallery for an average retail price of $8.
“The sauce is moving at the rate of 10 gallons per week,” said Conklin. “The ultimate goal with this is just to have fun.”
