Country singer-songwriter Chuck Pyle performs Friday in Gypsum.
GYPSUM, Colorado — Country singer-songwriter Chuck Pyle will be the star of Gypsum's outdoor concert this Friday, June 26.
He's performing at Lundgren Amphitheater as part of The People's Friday weekly concert and movie series. This week's movie is the animated children's film “Over the Hedge.”
Dubbed “The Zen Cowboy” by reviewers, Pyle hails from the Front Range town Palmer Lake, and plans to take the stage with his guitar.
Expect to hear some of his classic songs, like “Jaded Lover” and “Cadillac Cowboy,” along with outdoor-themed songs from his upcoming album, which is due out in January.
“My sound has a Southwestern feel,” Pyle said. “It's mostly acoustic and it always has a tempo that people say they love to put my music on and drive. It always has an in-motion sort of feel. Some of my songs are distinctly the tempo of a horse.”
Pyle's nickname stems from his cowboy hats and thoughtful lyrics.
“I wrote this song called ‘Keep it Simple,'” he said. “It was a satire about Boulder, and so the Boulder (Daily) Camera started calling me ‘The Zen Cowboy' because it was such a contradiction that there I was a cowboy but I was writing this satire about Boulder being the cosmic center of the known self-help universe. At one point in the 90s, 12 Step was king. There was a 12-step program for everything.”
A performer in his own right, Pyle has also written songs for big names like John Denver and Jerry Jeff Walker.
Pyle clearly remembers the first time he heard a big name musician singing one of his songs, “Jaded Lover,” on the radio.
“It's just a thrill,” he said. “The first time I heard it, I had to pull the car over and listen. It was one of those amazing moments, and to top it off, it was by one of my idols who did the song, it was Jerry Jeff Walker.”

Pyle swears by a finger picking style inspired by acoustic artists like Dave Van Ronk and James Taylor.
As far as the concert in Gypsum is concerned, Pyle said he hopes everyone walks away having had a good time.
“I expect it to have a humorous atmosphere,” he said.
