Brush Creek Elementary Biathlon

Fifth graders from Brush Creek Elementary School competed in the eight annual biathlon event last Friday under the supervision of teacher Shelly Fullhart.

Hayden Gitchell took first place for the boys, breaking the old school record. He was followed by Alex Davis in second place and Brandon Sheard in third place. Jordan Denning took first place for the girls, also setting a new record. She was followed by Jessica Hartley in second place and Alix Thurston in third place.

All of the Brush Creek students should be proud for training hard and pushing themselves to new levels. Everyone at BCES thanks the Eagle Police Department for help in making sure streets and crosswalks were clear for the event.

Dancing girls

Local girls in kindergarten through fifth grades can celebrate their last day of school at a Slumber Soirée with members of the Eagle Valley High School Dance Team.

The party is planned at the Brush Creek Pavilion Thursday, June 4 with drop off at 5 p.m. Participants can be picked up at 8 a.m. Friday, June 5. Cost is $45 and proceeds benefit the EVHS Dance Team.

No dance experience necessary. Party-goers will have the opportunity to learn dances infused with jazz and hip hop moves. Girls will receive a music CD that goes with the learned dance, and all activities will be organized by age group.

Adult sponsors will be present during the entire event. Participants should bring a sleeping bag, pillow, and overnight bag and come dressed in pajamas and comfy shoes. Transportation to and from the Brush Creek Pavilion must be provided by parents.

Space is limited and girls will be accepted on a first come, first served basis. Information and fees must be postmarked by Friday, May 29, with checks payable to: EVHS Dance Team. Send to: Cindy Ramunno, P.O. Box 806, Eagle, CO 81631. For more information, call 328-2301.

Sylvan Lake programs

Sylvan Lake State Park is starting up its popular summer program series this week.

All programs meet at the Camper Services Building at Sylvan Lake.

The first program — Terrific Trees — is planned Friday, May 29 at 7 p.m. Participants can join in and learn about fascinating trees around Sylvan Lake. There will be a short hike so participants are urged to wear good shoes and bring plenty of water.

The second program is planned Saturday, May 30 at 7 p.m. Titled “Sylvan History” the program will explore who lived in the area and how they made their living long before the area became a state park.

Visitors should bring their own lawn chairs and parents should accompany their children.

Questions about the Sylvan Lake State Park programs can be sent to myoun621@uwsp.edu or call 328-2021 ext. 206.

Summer reading

The Literacy Project is planning a summer program for students entering sixth, seventh and eighth grades called "Reading on the Go!"

Sessions are planned on Thursdays at both the Eagle and Gypsum libraries. The program will run from June 11 through July 23, and The Literacy Project is currently actively recruiting students. The students will do reading and writing activities in the morning and experiential activities in the afternoon. There is a small fee of $25 for six Thursdays, which includes a new novel to keep, instruction and the activities. For more information call The Literacy Project at 949-5026.
