Sixteen Gypsum gymnasts qualify for state meet

In the first meet of the year, the Western Eagle County Metropolitan Recreation District Phoenix Gymnastics team brought home first place in Level Five and qualified 16 for the state meet.

GYPSUM, Colorado — In the first meet of the year, the Western Eagle County Metropolitan Recreation District Phoenix Gymnastics team brought home first place in Level Five and qualified 16 for the state meet.

The Phoenix is marking its second year of competition. The team trains at the Gypsum Rec Center under the leadership of Rob Jones, Derrick Gregory and Michelle Whiddon.

In the 11 years and up age group, Christina Ho lead the team with a second place finish overall. Devon Green took third, and Malia Barca placed fifth overall.

Tristin Book placed third overall in the younger age category of 6 to 10 years.

The Lady Phoenix swept the floor routine in the older age bracket. Christina won the vault with a 9.2 and placed second on the floor with an 8.6. Devon won the floor routine with a score of 9.0, and took second on the beam with a score of 8.6. Malia took second on the vault with a score of 9.1 and placed third on the bars and the floor routine. Tristin Book won the vault and the bars and took second on floor.

The Level Four girls gained experience and placed several in the top five. Emily Wells placed fourth on the beam with a score of 8.5 in the 11 and up age group. Ciara Heiden placed fifth on the vault with a score of 9.4 in the 9-10 year olds and Kes Andrews placed fourth on the floor with an 8.75 and fifth on the bars with an 8.3 in the 5-8 year old group.

Level Five overall scores: Christina Ho 32.8, Devon Green 32.6, Malia Barca 31.8 and Tristin Book 30.5.

Level Four overall scores: Carlee Morrison 34.4, Morgan Kromar 33.5, Jessica Hartley 33.1, Kes Andrews 32.9, Samantha Nathnagel 32.9, Jewel Scrivens 32.2, Ciara Heiden 32.0, Hayley Carpenter 31.9, Emily Wells 31.7, Barbara Ann Fischer 31.6, Addison Nathnagel 30.6, Alyssa Ortega 30.0, and Paige Green 29.1.

The Phoenix will host a meet at the Gypsum Rec Center on Saturday, May 23.
