Mark Strakbein, former principal at Battle Mountain High School and the first principal for Red Canyon High School, was named principal at Eagle Valley High School.Mikel Kerst was appointed to the Eagle Town Board seat formerly held by Jon Stavney. The vacancy was created when Stavney was elected mayor.
Eagle resident Vickie Olson and her calico cat Callie won several ribbons at a Denver-area cat show.
With their superior speed on display, the EVHS girls soccer team bested Aspen 3-0. Captains Jessica Jagger and Julie Taylor anchored the defense with Kirsten DeGroat and Samantha Phillips rounding out the senior presence on the team.

A crowd of 450 people attended the 9Health Fair in Eagle.In EVHS baseball news, catcher Matt Bernhardt, coming back from a broken leg that sidelined him the previous season, went two for two against Grand Valley including a two-run home run.
In girls soccer, Brandi Yeik suffered a fractured foot while attempting a slide tackle against a Battle Mountain defender. Forward Tatianna Timmons picked up the slack, scoring two goals and middle fielder Lacey Ramunno scored her first goal of the season.
The community was mourning the death of life-long resident Dennie Eaton.
EVHS students Ryan Dee, Scott Heicher, Mike Long and Jesus Gallegos assisted the Colorado Division of Wildlife with a big horn sheep trapping and relocation program.
20 years ago Week of April 26, 1989
Seven sky cranes and crew members from the Alabama National Guard, visited the Eagle County Airport. The helicopters and the Guardsmen were participating in a high altitude aviation training and winter survival course through the Colorado Army National Guard.Eagle Valley Middle School teacher Kim Castle returned to town after completing her first trip to the Boston Marathon. She was the 365th woman to cross the finish line after being seated 423rd for the race.
John McKeon of Gypsum won $25,000 in the Colorado Lottery wheel spin.
Jeff Busch and Ken Wienke were selected to represent EVHS at the Colorado Boys State conference.
According to its most recent game counts, the Colorado Division of Wildlife announced the state had more elk and antelope than at any other time in the century.
Two Los Angeles men were arrested at the Interstate 70 Loaf n Jug after Eagle County Sheriffs deputies discovered 38 pounds of marijuana in their possession.
30 years ago Week of April 26, 1979
Three of the seven candidates for seats on the Eagle County School Board recently dismissed assistant transportation director Al Abrams, Minturn Middle School librarian Phyllis Finlay and Battle Mountain High School teacher Edmund Hart were current or former employees. Questions about conflicts of interest for these three were raised during a meet the candidates session.Construction work was under way to extend four lanes of Interstate 70 from Eagle to the east end of Glenwood Canyon.
EVHS Student Council officers selected for the 1979-80 term included President Sonja Faulkner, Vice President Deena Starr and Secretary Lynda Mayne.
Heidi Walden and Dorothy Lorig were selected to represent EVHS at Colorado Columbine Girls State.
The Eagle Valley Chamber of Commerce hosted an information meeting about the new Beaver Creek project planned by Vail Associates.
40 years ago Week of April 24, 1969
The upcoming school board election didnt generate any contested races. Pete Dodo was the only candidate from the Wolcott area, Claude Gerard was the only candidate from Gypsum, William Stevens was the only candidate from Sweetwater/Burns and Theodore Poliac was the only candidate from Minturn. Harold Koonce of Eagle was the sole candidate for the Colorado Mountain College board of directors.Sheryl Oleson and Sue Ellen Price were selected to represent Eagle County at the Colorado Girls State program.
Kaibab Industries announced it had decided to keep its Eagle operation open. Additionally, B.B. Conaster, the local manger, announced excavation work was planned for a new sawmill at an estimated cost of $300,000.
Eagle County announced it would no longer allow trash burning or shooting at the county dump. Additionally, new operation hours were set 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays, except Wednesday when the facility was closed.
50 years ago Week of April 23, 1959
Under the headline More housing needed in Eagle the Enterprise reported the Colorado Legislature had increased the number of highway patrolmen statewide, including Eagle County. Eagle was designated as a patrol radio state site, with plans to station two operators locally. However, the lack of suitable housing was cited as a problem that could derail the plan. The town needs a patron saint one with a desire to promote a moderate housing project, noted the Enterprise.The Eagle Chamber of Commerce announced a special meeting. The purpose of the session was to reorganize the group to spark more local business interest.
The Eagle County Home Demonstration Club planned its annual achievement day celebration. The theme was Colorados Centennial Rush to the Rockies.
A front-page cartoon marked the occasion of Hawaii becoming the 50th state.
60 years ago Week of April 22, 1949
The Eagle Community Methodist Church was celebrating its 50th anniversary. A special banquet was planned, along with an anniversary worship service.Mildred Courtly was found not guilty by reason of insanity in the Jan. 1 shooting death of her husband. The Eagle County jury sent the 24-year-old mother to the state hospital in Pueblo.
Lewis Phillips of Yampa was the new owner of the McCoy Hotel and Store.
McCoy voters approved a $76,000 bond issue for a new school in the community. The final election tally was 49 votes in favor and 6 opposed.
Residents in Eagle and Wolcott were set to vote in a school district consolidation election.
70 years ago Week of April 28, 1939
The Colorado Bureau of Public Roads gave complete approval for the state highway department plan for construction of a new road over Battle Mountain. It is claimed the new road will be a radical departure over the present road, reducing grades, eliminating blind curves and making a much safer, easier road to travel, reported the Enterprise.Twenty students were prepared to take part in the countys eighth grade commencement. The class salutatorian was Delbert Kellogg of Avon and the valedictorian was Joe Brett of Edwards.
Mike Montoya of New Mexico knocked out Chief Ballard of Idaho in the fourth round of a boxing match staged by promoter Hershey Wilson in Gypsum. In warm-up action, Bearcat Bearden of Edwards earned a decision over Carl Shinkle.
