Potatoes are versatile.

They can be baked or mashed, turned into bread, French fries or chips. At Potatopalooza in Eagle on Saturday, Sept. 6, potatoes will be transformed into cars, bowling balls and a reason to have fun.

Eagle’s second-annual Potatopalooza is a celebration of Eagle’s potato-farming history. Up until the 1960s agriculture drove the local economy; and potatoes were a principal crop.

“Any excuse for a party,” says Erin Seabury, Potatopalooza organizer.

Potatopalooza is an all-day event with live music including: The Jazzoompa band from Eagle and the Railbenders (a Johnny Cash-sounding band) from Denver. A kids zone will feature activities such as bowling with potatoes, hula hooping with a hot potato, chalk art and a jumping castle. Broadway Liquors is hosting a fly fishing clinic with prizes to be won.

The Eagle Valley Chamber of Commerce is organizing a support your troops stroll through the downtown business district. According to Chamber director Tim Cochrane, participants can pick up a pretend passport from the Chamber booth, then visit various local businesses, that will stamp the passport, while reflecting on the sacrifices of our troops and the freedom enjoyed in Eagle. After 2 p.m., passports may be picked up at Alpine Ambience.

Other activities on the street include the Porchlight Players karaoke and performance by a high school band, Remnants of the Riddle.

People can win prizes by guessing the tater total of a five gallon jar filled with potatoes, located at the Pharmacy; or by winning the potato car derby.
There will also be an Eagle Valley Alliance Art Show where artists will exhibit 2 x 2 foot creations. At least a dozen local artists will contribute to this exhibit, says Seabury.

The Mother Earth Exhibition featuring 20 globes displayed around Eagle since June will be auctioned off at 5 p.m. in conjunction with Potatopalooza. All proceeds will be donated to six local charities including The OK Corral, Snowboard Outreach Society, The Youth Foundation, Eagle County Fair and Rodeo, Shaw Cancer Center, and the Vail Valley Charitable Fund.

Last year, Boots on Broadway raised $50,250, notes Holli Snyder, general manager of NRC broadcasting.

“I can be completely optimistic and say this year $100,000 is our goal. I would love to give as much money to charities as I can,” says Snyder.

All these events can be enjoyed after or before stopping by the food vendors, the beer garden or sipping on potato vodka martinis that will be available in front of the old First American Heritage building.

“Last year I was hoping 500 people would come and probably 1,200 people showed up. It was fantastic,” says Seabury. “The event is definitely growing. It is going to be bigger than last year.”

Potatopalooza will be sponsored by the Town of Eagle, Centurytel, NRC Broadcasting, Everyday Outfitters, the Eagle Valley Enterprise/the Vail Daily, the Downtown Merchants Association, Desmond Home Builders, Nexgen, and the Eagle Ranch Fitness Center.
