Volunteers sought for Sylvan Lake trail-building project

Snow-capped peaks, sparkling, trout-filled waters: Sylvan Lake State Park is postcard perfect, except for some of its trails.

On the weekend of Sept. 6 and 7 several teams of passionate outdoors people will show one of the Park’s fishing trails some love. Volunteers will tackle a challenging section of new trail construction.

The objective is to create and maintain trails that help visitors experience the park’s recreational opportunities while protecting habitat and water quality. Erosion from poorly constructed or maintained trails can increase sediment load in alpine streams and lakes compromising fish habitat.

Seventy five volunteers will camp at the state park and enjoy morning and evening meals together thanks to support from the National Forest Foundation and Vail Resorts. Saturday evening those competitive sea captain types can participate in boat races on the lake.

Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado (VOC) is staging the project, one of more than 30 this season.

“We are very excited to work with Sylvan Lake State Park on this project,” states Jeff Stucker who is the volunteer team leader on the project. “This a beautiful piece of Colorado, in need of some attention to keep it that way.”

Volunteers from across Colorado participate in VOC projects often with little or no experience. Trained, experience crew leaders, all volunteers, show participants what to do with tools supplied by VOC.

There is still space available on this premier project. Because of the arduous nature of some of the work the minimum age for volunteers is 16. Get more information and register for this project at www.voc.org or call 800-925-2220.

Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado (VOC) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to motivate and enable citizens to be active stewards of Colorado’s public lands. Founded in 1984, VOC has engaged over 50,000 volunteers in the completion of almost 300 trail and habitat projects. Work to date is valued at more than $15 million. Projects range in size from 15 to 1,000 volunteers and include building and maintaining trails, planting and removing invasive plants. For more information on VOC visit www.voc.org.
