Patriotic golf
Eagle Ranch Golf Club will participate in the fourth annual Patriot Golf Day weekend Saturday, Sept. 4 through Monday, Sept. 6. Golfers across the country, and at Eagle Ranch Golf Club, have the unique opportunity to donate an additional $1 or more to benefit Folds of Honor Foundation, which provides post-secondary educational scholarships for children and spouses of American military service men and women killed or disabled in action. Eagle Ranch Golf Club will request at least an additional $1 for each green fee that is processed this weekend. Patriot Golf Day is jointly supported by The PGA of America and the United States Golf Association. President George W. Bush, 43rd President of the United States of America, serves as the 2010 Honorary Chairman of Patriot Golf Day weekend.
“Eagle Ranch Golf Club is proud to support this meaningful charity. Our military and their families make such an incredible sacrifice and we want to show our appreciation and support them,” said Jeff Boyer, Eagle Ranch director of golf. “We hope that you can come play this weekend and make a donation.”
With a $1 or more donation, Eagle Ranch Golf Club will be offering special “Shoulder Season Pricing.” For non-resident guests, the 18-Hole green fee will be $79 including cart and for Eagle, Garfield and Summit County residents, the fee will be $69. On Saturday, Sept. 4, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., golfers also can participate in a Closest-to-the-Pin Contest on Hole No. 5. Participants must donate $10. The men's and ladies winners will receive a complimentary foursome at Eagle Ranch Golf Club.
Through events nationwide since 2007, PGA Professionals have helped raise more than $5.3 million, allowing Folds of Honor to award 1,163 post-secondary educational scholarships. There are 172,000 dependents of fallen and wounded military service men and women from the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts alone, and 85 percent of those dependents do not qualify for federal educational assistance. Patriot Golf Day allows Folds of Honor to present an ongoing tribute to our brave service members by ensuring that the families of fallen and wounded warriors have hope for the right educational start to life and best future possible.
As a proud supporter and Official Card of Patriot Golf Day, American Express will match donations made using an American Express® Card1 during Patriot Golf Day Weekend to support the Folds of Honor Foundation.
Individuals interested in contributing to Folds of Honor Foundation, and those applying for scholarships should visit FoldsofHonor.org.

Reader request
This week we received the following e-mail from reader Terry Latham:“When I was 14 years old and recovering from a severe case of rheumatic fever, my parents sent me to stay with my aunt and uncle Pearl and Wally Palmer, who owned and operated a truck stop/ice cream shop in Eagle. The year was 1960. I stayed for the entire summer and made many friends who worked at the truck stop and lived in Eagle. I always intended to return, but never did. However, I loved Eagle and the people that I met there.
“I went on to Join the Navy and served 28 years as a meteorologist all over the world and on ships. I have been the director of a small non-profit that aids abused and neglected children on the Mississippi gulf coast for the last 15 years. If possible, could you place this in your paper with a request that anyone who was in Eagle at that time who remembers me contact me by e-mail at lathamterry@bellsouth.net?”
